In Love and War

This week on GH, the battle between friends turned foes Sonny and Jason takes a new twist when Jason must consider turning Sonny in to the feds. After Sonny boldly lands a Zacchara shipment in Jason's territory, an explosion rocks the harbor, destroying the contents. As Sonny and Claudia watch the fiery aftermath, Jason arrives and issues Sonny a cryptic warning. "Jason goes to Sonny and says, 'Next time, it's going to be worse'" previews Guza. "Jason also knows that Sonny is married to Claudia, and the more Claudia is pulling the strings, the more Jason has to feel that anything can happen." Realizing that Anthony will not be pleased with Jason's retaliatory move, Sonny attempts to maintain a modicum of order and points out that neither of them should start a war. As Guza notes, "Neither one of them wants a genuine war because they know if they do, it will be the apocalypse. But, there are all sorts of personal dynamics here that far outweigh their rational sense of how to do business. You're going to see them increasingly pushed to the edge. The idea of the son usurping the father, Sonny believing that Carly and Jason were responsible for taking his kids from him, all this comes into play, and Claudia is not helping matters." Indeed, Claudia grows apprehensive about a Jason/Sonny reconciliation because it would end her alliance with Sonny, along with her opportunity to stay in Sonny's house and locate the incriminating DVD's that Jerry left behind. So, Claudia reminds Sonny of all the ways that Jason betrayed him and states it's time to play hardball. "If sonny and Jason were to reconcile, it would leave Claudia in a very vulnerable position" Guza details. "Sonny would have no reason to stay with Claudia. She'd suddenly find herself kicked out on the curb and she's desperately trying to cover the secret most damning of all, that she was largely responsible for the shooting of Michael." Meanwhile, Jason rushes to Spinelli's aid after The Jackal is arrested by the FBI for computer hacking. Agent Rayner relays that Spinelli is facing prison time unless Jason cooperates with the feds. Rayner says they will drop the charges, if Jason serves as an undercover agent and help them bring down Sonny and Anthony. "This personalizes it" Guza continues. "Spinelli is right in the middle of Sonny vs Jason and has flat out done everything the feds said he did. It's not a frame up. He did it, and he did it largely on Jason's orders, so Jason is hugely compromised by this "Sophie's Choice." "Adding to Jason's guilt is Maxie who reinforces the point over and over again. 'You did this. You put him in this place, you've got to get him out'. But the fact is, the only way to do that is to take down his mentor, his friend, his father, his brother, his rival, Sonny." Jason winds up trapped between a rock and a hard place. "Jason has tried on a number of occasions to talk to Sonny and that has not worked," Guza explains. "If Jason doesn't deliver Sonny and Anthony, Spinelli goes to prison so Jason is really in a bind here. Right now, cooperating with the feds is the only logical thing he can do." "So, what he chooses to do about it, and how it's pulled off and who he does it, is the story. We havn't see Jason's limit yet, but we will as this plays out. " |
