An Interview with Steve

What has been your favorite storyline in the 16 years you've been on the show?

Definitely the change that occurred for my character -- going from Jason Quartermaine to Jason Morgan was really the turning point on the show, and in my life as an actor. I was actually contemplating leaving at that point because I wasn't working all that much. Then Maurice [Benard] kind of took me aside and was like, "You know, you've got something, but we're not really sure what you do. What's your technique?" And I said, "Technique? I don't even know what you're talking about!" [Laughs] That's when he started working with me personally and then he really did become my mentor on the show and, at the same time, in real life.

You're very involved in the storyline that's happening now -Do you like doing these big action stories?

The cool thing with our show is that we do a lot of action and when we do it, it's usually pretty good. I think the Metro Court was probably the best crisis-adventure-suspense that we've ever done here. It was a great story, because everyone was so good -- the stakes were so high, there was so much going on, and it was just so well-written. It's fun when everyone gets together like that. When you get all those actors in the same room and it's high drama, something happens -- there's an energy.

I was totally blown away by how quickly everything moves, and how you really have to nail your scenes in one take -- do you hear that from a lot of guest stars?

When you do movies, it's so slow -- waiting and waiting. I was so naïve, because I'd done some film stuff, but I was here primarily, then I went off to do more and I had the whole movie memorized before I stepped on set. They were like, "What are you doing? We take like seven takes before we get our lines!" It was a little foreign to me. When film actors come here, they're like, "Wait, what? That was it? You can't do it again?" [Laughs] "No, we're moving on!" There's not room for a lot of error.
